How many times do we go through life just going through the motions? Sometimes the gym can be the same way. We go to the gym to get the workout in, or just to get through it. It’s just another box to check off on the “to do” list. But let’s really take a look at what our gym time really should be. What if we trained with intention. What if we were completely present in every moment, with every movement and with every breath.
Time for Yourself
Instead of looking at your workouts as something to check off the “to do”list, see it as time that you get to spend focusing on yourself. No work, no children, no worries, just for this hour. This is your time to move your body and feel good. This is the time to listen to the music that you enjoy and to do something that’s just for you, and only you. Enjoy it. Not as a task, but as a moment in time where you are truly devoted to yourself.
Mind Body Connection
Rather than getting through your reps as quickly as possible and moving on to the next set, take your time and really focus on what you’re doing. Train with the intent of being completely present. If you’re doing triceps extensions, then move slowly with perfect form, with perfect extension and really focus on the squeeze at the end. When you’re doing your squats, really feel the movement of your muscles, your quads firing, your hamstrings extending and the glute squeeze at the end. If you’re doing bicep curls, really focus on the muscle, how its moving, how it feels, where you’re holding the tension in the movement. There’s so much more to a bicep curl, if you really pay attention. And always let your breath flow with your movement. Your body is amazing! It does amazing things. When you’re working out, move your body with intention, flow into the motion.
If you’re lifting really heavy, and you need a longer recovery time, don’t lose focus and stay present. In between sets, rather than scrolling on your phone, take the time to meditate and focus on breath. Re-center, recover and visualize performing your next reps with perfect form. Or, if you’re doing more of a volume work out and doing a more active recovery between sets (like push-ups or jump squats) then use the same mind body connection and focus on form and movement. Feel into your body and your muscles.
Our gym time is what we make of it. It can be more than just something that you need to get done that day. It can do wonders for you mentally and physically. Just be present, and enjoy it.
